MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman will join other GCC countries in marking the 38th edition of Gulf Traffic Week 2026, held under the theme 'Cross Safely', from May 3 to May 7.

This year’s campaign places a strong emphasis on reducing pedestrian-related accidents and enhancing overall road safety, with key activities centred at the Mall of Oman.

Organised by the Royal Oman Police (ROP) in coordination with traffic authorities across the region, the initiative will feature educational exhibitions, school workshops, and the deployment of advanced AI-based monitoring systems. The campaign particularly targets pedestrian behaviour and safe road usage practices.

Eng Ahmed bin Said al Amri, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, will inaugurate the main awareness exhibition organised by the General Directorate of Traffic at the Mall of Oman on Sunday.

Speaking to Observer, Lieutenant Colonel Saif bin Ahmed al Ramadhani, Director of the Executive Office at the National Committee for Road Safety, said a wide range of educational and interactive activities have been planned throughout the week.

“The focus of this year’s campaign is on safe road crossing. In Oman’s context, we are also highlighting the dangers of crossing wadis during rainfall. Reckless crossings have resulted in loss of life and property during such conditions,” he said.

A series of traffic exhibitions will be held across various governorates, alongside a discussion session at the General-Directorate of Traffic next Tuesday. The session will bring together government entities and private sector stakeholders involved in traffic safety.

Special displays by the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Guard are also planned, offering broader perspectives on pedestrian safety and traffic management.

Key highlights of the campaign include promoting the use of designated pedestrian crossings and adherence to traffic signals. The week will also feature lectures, media engagements, and a participatory seminar.

Meanwhile, the ROP has activated AI-powered cameras to detect violations such as failure to wear seat belts and the use of mobile phones while driving.
